Bite-Sized Game History: Microsoft Acquires Activision, Pac-Man Design Docs on Display, and the Neverending Quest for Tomb Raider’s Nude Code

Despondent over poor working conditions, a group of developers left Atari in 1979 and formed Activision, the first fully-independent third-party console developer.

Here we are 43 years later, and executives at Activision stand accused by employees (and government regulators) of creating a hostile workplace of their own. But while a number of employees have struck out on their own over the years, Activision’s fate will soon lie with Microsoft, as CEO Bobby Kotick has decided to sell his company to the consolemaker, effectively putting Activision on the path to becoming a first-party developer.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision is a seismic shift for the game industry, and there are a lot of moving parts involved (including those abuse allegations and an FTC approval process that could take up to two years). You’ll find the first steps in that journey in this edition of Bite-Sized Game History, as well as a pop-up museum devoted to Pac-Man, and the infamous (and fictional) Nude Code from Tomb Raider.

Celebrate 20 Years of Xbox With the Microsoft-Produced “Power On: The Story of Xbox” Documentary Series

Microsoft’s anniversary celebration for the Xbox has reached its final form with the release of Power On: The Story of Xbox, a new six-part documentary series.

Power On was produced in-house by Microsoft and it promises to tell the full story (“glitches and all”) behind the creation of the original Xbox. Bungie’s Halo: Combat Evolved gets the spotlight in the fourth episode, and viewers who stick with the series to the end will be able to dive into the fallout from some of Microsoft’s costly mistakes, with two final episodes devoted to the Xbox 360’s Red Ring of Death and the Xbox One’s TV-centric debut.

Microsoft Opens Virtual Xbox Museum for Console’s 20th Anniversary

The original Xbox made its worldwide debut on November 15, 2001, and Microsoft has been celebrating 20 Years of Xbox with special Anniversary Edition swag and the #Xbox20 hashtag all year long. The consolemaker will also roll out a six-part documentary series, Power On: The Story of Xbox, in December.

But first, they’ve opened the virtual doors to an Xbox Museum at Xbox.com.

Microsoft Acquires Bethesda for $7.5 Billion: Here’s What All the Major Players Had to Say

Microsoft continued their next-gen shopping spree yesterday morning with the acquisition of Bethesda Softworks for a whopping $7.5 billion. The purchase includes the rights to all of the publisher’s world-famous franchises (including The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein, and Dishonored), as well as their stable of in-house development studios (including Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, Arkane, and MachineGames).

The Microsoft-Bethesda marriage is the biggest deal ever between two gaming companies, and instantly doubles the number of internal studios operating under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella. Naturally, all of the major players involved in this transaction had a lot to say.
